Taking on Christmas in Penang

The Christmas presents have been unwrapped and the Christmas dinners have been feasted upon; the champagne bottles have been dutifully popped and the resultant couple of broken glasses from said champagne have been swept away. Now we move on to the best part — reliving the memories of a wonderful week spent with family, food and one really adorable dog with really big ears.

We decided to make our way back to Penang this year to celebrate Christmas with my family. Every year we spend it with the Ninja’s as seen here, here, and here. Steering a little away from tradition, we thought a trip back to Penang would be nice after so many years away.

The Ninja prepared the most wonderful feast on Christmas day. We couldn’t get a turkey so last minute so we had the next best thing (if not better, in the Ninja’s opinion): a slow-roasted sage and parsley pork loin and pan-seared buttered steak, done to the perfect medium rare.

Now that everyone in the house was of age, we let the wines flow, starting with champagne with sides of strawberry and cheese at the start, before moving on to the heavier reds to go with the juicy meats awaiting dinner.

It was a night of many things — delicious food, roaring laughter, crunchy pork, and a few hours in, red faces — but most of all, it was a night of and for family, the most precious thing in the world.

We also had a coincidental dress code — white. Who says you need snow to make it Christmassy around here?

I am so glad I decided to take the whole week off because for the first time since I started working, I got to spend more than just a rushed weekend or a hurried few days with my family. And this year was especially festive with cousins making their way to Penang for the festive season.

Resultantly, there was a lot of the best things.

Sweet treats.

More sweet treats.

Hot cocoa, or in this case, a hot cuppa java in front of a pretend fireplace. (No kidding, playing a loop video of a burning fire does heaps to add to the atmosphere.)

All enjoyed in the warm embrace of family. I think that’s the right keyword for this holiday: family.

Human ones and furry four-legged ones alike.

Things are beginning to wind down from all the festive excitement and reality is beginning to catch up again but at least I’ll always have this new set of memories now to look back and refuel.

Meanwhile, there is a whole chocolate walnut pie and a leftover Christmas panettone outside waiting to be eaten with a mug of hot coffee so I shall relish whatever is left of this holiday.

I hope all of you had just as wonderful a holiday with your family. It’s not quite over yet.
